Introduction to Exercise Area

Is this what you used to do?

  • Made regressions – going back over words you have just read?
  • Read one word at a time?
  • Sub-vocalised every word, as you read word-by-word?
  • Frequently lost concentration/ read without an aim?
  • Launched into documents without any preview (so as to prime the mind)?
  • Had only one reading speed?
  • Forgot what you read?

If you want to read fast and effectively, and continue to avoid these faults, find the fault below, click on the link in the ‘solutions’ section to go to exercises/illustrations to correct the problem.

Regressions –going back over words you have just read
  • Read in a straight line, as it was written

Reading one word at a time /
sub-vocalising the words

  • Use more of your span of vision
  • Use CHUNKING - read in groups of words
  • Divide the lines into two or three sections, depending on the width of the lines and your visual ability
  • Keep your sub-vocalisation just to the key or "working" words

Having only one reading speed

  • Be like a car with a gear-box
  • Different speeds for different reads
  • Slow down for important/difficult material
  • Speed up for less important/easier material
  • Probably can read much of your job-related reading fast due to your familiarity with the subject, though bear in mind the bullets above
